Journal History
Journal of Nusantara Economy was formally established in 2022 under the management of PT. Islamic Research Publisher, in collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro, Indonesia. The journal was founded to provide a scholarly platform for advancing research on contemporary economic transformation, business innovation, financial development, governance, and Islamic economics, with particular attention to the rapidly changing economic landscape of Indonesia, the Nusantara region, and the wider Asia-Pacific. Its inaugural issue, Volume 1, Number 1, was published in December 2022, marking the beginning of the journal’s commitment to rigorous, relevant, and internationally oriented economic scholarship.
Since its establishment, the journal has maintained a consistent biannual publication schedule, with issues published in January–June and July–December. This continuity represents an important foundation of its editorial development and reflects the journal’s commitment to regular scholarly communication. Alongside publication consistency, the journal has progressively expanded its intellectual scope, editorial network, and international scholarly participation.
A significant milestone in the journal’s development has been the progressive internationalization of its authorship and editorial community. While its initial scholarly orientation was strongly rooted in Indonesian and Nusantara economic issues, the journal has increasingly attracted contributions from researchers affiliated with institutions across Asia, Europe, Africa, and other international academic communities. The growing geographical diversity of its authors demonstrates the journal’s transition from a primarily regional publication toward a broader international forum for economic research. This development has also encouraged comparative and cross-country studies that examine economic transformation beyond the boundaries of a single national context.
The internationalization process has simultaneously extended to the journal’s editorial structure and scholarly network. Its editors and academic contributors increasingly represent diverse institutional and geographical backgrounds across different countries and continents, strengthening the journal’s capacity to engage with multiple intellectual traditions and research environments. This geographical diversification contributes to broader peer-review perspectives, greater subject-matter expertise, and a more internationally connected editorial process. The journal regards diversity in its editorial and authorship base as an important component of scholarly quality, independence, and international relevance.
In parallel with this international expansion, the journal has progressively broadened its thematic coverage. Its current scope encompasses economic transformation, sustainable development, public policy, business innovation, entrepreneurship, digital economy, economic law, financial regulation, governance, international trade, investment, and Asia-Pacific–Europe economic relations. The journal also provides a dedicated space for research on Islamic economics, Islamic finance, halal economy, sustainable finance, financial technology (FinTech), and inclusive growth. This thematic development reflects the journal’s effort to respond to emerging economic transformations and to connect conventional economic scholarship with Islamic and interdisciplinary perspectives.
The journal’s evolution is therefore characterized by several interconnected dimensions of progress: publication continuity, thematic expansion, internationalization of authorship, diversification of editorial representation, and increasing engagement with comparative and interdisciplinary research. The growing participation of scholars from different countries and continents has enabled Journal of Nusantara Economy to move beyond a narrowly localized research agenda while retaining its distinctive commitment to the economic realities of the Nusantara and Asia-Pacific regions.
Looking ahead, Journal of Nusantara Economy is committed to strengthening its position as an international, interdisciplinary, and globally connected journal in economics and related fields. Its strategic development emphasizes further diversification of authors and editors, stronger international collaboration, increased representation from different regions and academic communities, and the publication of theoretically rigorous, empirically robust, and policy-relevant research. The journal particularly welcomes comparative, cross-national, and interdisciplinary studies capable of contributing to international debates on economic transformation, sustainability, digitalization, financial innovation, governance, and inclusive development.
Through this progressive trajectory, Journal of Nusantara Economy seeks to evolve from a journal rooted in the Nusantara context into a globally connected scholarly platform linking economic scholarship across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, and other regions. Its internationalization is understood not merely as geographical expansion, but as a continuing effort to improve editorial quality, broaden intellectual exchange, strengthen research networks, and enhance the global visibility and impact of scholarship published by the journal.
